Imagine it.

Take a moment now to think of your dream piece or goal piece - the music you’ve always wanted to be able to play at the piano.

If you don’t have one, think of your favorite artists, movies, shows, games, or anything else you love that contains music.

If you could snap your fingers and play any piece in the world instantly… think of what that might be for you.

Did you know it’s possible for us to start working on that piece by the third lesson?

And to be clear, this is not a play-by-ear, chord-based, or pattern-based approach… As you might know, there are methods out there that allow you to play a lot of easy, nice-sounding versions of pieces quite quickly.

Instead, this is learning a real, unsimplified piece of any genre directly from sheet music.

I won’t lie - to play a true goal piece with high-level musicality will take six months to a year to complete. But this piece is one that you normally wouldn’t even start until after several years of method books, scales, theory, and finger exercises!

So, I’m truly not exaggerating when I say that I’ve found a way to help students to learn piano 3x to 5x faster than normal!

Piano Studio of David Chang

My studio is suitable for the serious adult amateur that is seeking weekly, long-term lessons with excellent attendance.

Attorneys, judges, bankers, engineers, politicians, doctors, jewelers, fashion designers, investors, entrepreneurs, other professional musicians, other piano teachers… I’ve taught them all!

Whether the student is an experienced musician or a total beginner that has never read sheet music before, we typically set a goal piece and begin working towards it right away using my unique learning methodologies.

Once we meet that goal, we’ll set an even higher one and work towards that, continuing always to advance several times faster than normal.

Obviously, those students who are most dedicated will always experience the most dramatic multipliers!

Here's just a sampling of what students experience in my studio...

GO FOR THE GOAL IMMEDIATELY

Beginning their goal piece - chosen by them directly - by the third lesson and very possibly even in the first or second lesson if they can read music already. If they don’t know how to read music, students learn how to do so within the first two or three lessons! (Actual goal piece of a total beginner student pictured - Für Elise.)

ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS FAST

Completing their first goal piece in 6 to 12 months - something that could have normally taken 3 to 5 years! - resulting in an extremely dramatic boost in all aspects of their piano playing and musicianship.

Student-centered lessons you can trust.

OVER 20 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE

A teacher that began teaching at 13 years old. Even at that time, I found I had an unusual gift for teaching and have created amazing results for students for over 20 years. Although it's rare for me to teach children these days, I have taught as young as 3 years old all the way to students over the age of 80. Regardless of age, ability, or learning style, my methods have a universal power as they are rooted in science and logic.

EXPERIENCE ACROSS THE BOARD

A teacher that recognizes that since teaching and performing are completely separate skills, you must be exemplary in both. I received my bachelor's degree in music education from New York University and my master's degree in classical piano performance from Manhattan School of Music. I have performed at Steinway Hall, Lincoln Center, the Manhattan International Film Festival, and at many other venues throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. Both a Steinway Educational Partner and a Thumbtack Top Pro, I also received the Steinway Top Teacher Award in 2022 for my “hard work and dedication to music education” and for “the care and commitment with which [I] approach [my] piano students.”. Due to the results my students have experienced, my lessons are now nationally in-demand.

What's included as a student in my studio:

01

Weekly Strategic Teams OR Elite 1-to-1 Private Coaching

This is the main lesson program where every week students are revolutionizing strategy and mindset to move towards their goal pieces and other goals with the greatest possible speed, quality, and independence.

The vast majority of students will be in my strategic teams - here, it is possible for students to have both weekly collaboration and completely independent practice on their own pieces and goals regardless of student level! This will ultimately be both the most appropriate and most powerful option for almost everyone.

A very small number of especially serious students may decide to invest in private coaching instead if they are accepted to that program. Again, here every moment of the lesson is custom-tailored for you specifically.

02

30 to 90 Minute Consultation

Our initial call is both a consultation and an interview where we discover if we’re likely to have an extremely positive relationship for years to come. If needed, I’m happy to provide information and answer questions for up to 90 minutes - much longer than the typical call!

03

Performance Trading

If desired, there is constant opportunity for trading of performances in small groups to considerably boost one’s progress no matter which of the programs the student is in. We also have six consecutive weeks of performance training / trading leading up to each recital for those who are participating. This helps prepare the student for being able to perform under pressure in any kind of performance situation.

04

Studio Classes

There are four free 4-hour long studio classes each year. Here, a larger group of my students will introduce themselves; perform; learn how to constructively critique themselves; learn how to constructively critique others; and listen to critique, lecture, and demonstration from me personally. These classes are performances, trainings in critical listening and pedagogy, and masterclasses all-in-one. It’s a great opportunity to prepare for formal recitals as well as a chance to interact with the larger community.

05

Online Recitals

My studio has two online recitals each year through Zoom. These are formal performances open to the public. Students from all over the country may perform from the comfort of their own homes and of course loved ones may be invited as audience members from anywhere in the world. Though formal recitals take a lot of preparation, ultimately participating in this kind of experience is truly game-changing for the student’s progress.

06

In-Person Recital

There will be at least one in-person recital every year (COVID-permitting). This may be at the world-famous Steinway Hall in Midtown Manhattan or another beautiful venue. Many students are willing to fly to New York for this opportunity. Of course, one of the biggest tests of a pianist is the fact that many times, we won’t be performing on our own instruments.

To prepare students who come to me in-person, I have a grand piano, an upright piano, and three different high-end keyboards that will help to put them through all sorts of performing challenges. For those that are flying to New York, I’ll require that they rent practice rooms in their respective cities in the weeks leading up to the recital to simulate having to adjust instantaneously to never-before-played pianos. A recital fee may be necessary in some cases depending on the venue.

07

Advanced Student Performance Opportunities

If a student attains the ability to perform at least 8 minutes of music from memory, other additional opportunities open up for them. These may include specialized studio classes, honors recitals where only 3 or 4 students perform an entire program (whether online or at a live venue), and eventually even a solo recital (a program at least 50 minutes long that features the student as the sole performer)!

08

Lightning Support

It’s super easy to reach me whether by text or by e-mail! If we ever need to reschedule or an important question has come up, you can rest assured that I’ll reply very quickly.

There's nothing more valuable than time.

No matter who you are, you have the same number of hours in a day and the same number of days in a year.

Think of how many years will go by before you get to where you want to be if you choose a “regular” or even merely “very good” studio.

To be honest, the claim about achieving in 6 to 12 months what would have taken 3 to 5 years to achieve is actually understated, believe it or not…

When you consider the standard of musical quality in this studio, the truth is that it’s more likely the student achieves in 6 to 12 months what they would never have achieved on their own otherwise!

Meaning: even if the student learned their goal piece somewhere else eventually, it simply wouldn’t be up to the same standards of excellence anyway.

If this rings true to you, simply click the button below to schedule a call with me.

Good faith and sincere belief.

Everything in this studio is done in good faith. If we decide to move forward after the call, it is because we both sincerely believe that we’ll be an excellent fit. If for any reason things don’t work out, though, I will always refund any unused prepaid lessons.

In fact, because I genuinely care about each student’s personal musical journey, I’ll even give you guidance and advice to find the most suitable teacher for you free of charge!

What Students Are Saying

“I started taking lessons with David in January 2021 and it was by far one of the best decisions that I've ever made. David is not only one of the best music teachers that I've ever had, he's also one of the best teachers that I've had in any subject -ever.

David is a true professional and he's built an amazing studio with students of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds. I particularly like the way David indirectly teaches his students to be lifelong learners. In fact, I apply what I've learned from David in several different areas outside of music today. First, he listens to his students. I can attest to this because he listened to the names of the pieces that I wanted to play and he let me choose the piece that I wanted to learn.

His method of teaching is backed by science and his personal experiences as a pianist perfecting his craft. His style is very creative and effective and makes learning the piano collaborative, structured and fun. In a short amount of time I was able to play my first piece Comptine d'un autre ete and starting on my next piece Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.

If you are reading this review, you are more than likely looking for a piano teacher or you're on the fence about taking lessons with David. Either way, you have my word that lessons with David will be well worth your time and investment if you're willing to put in the work. David is a hidden gem and you will get his best every lesson. Thank you David for allowing me to be apart of your music world."

Anthony C.

"Before taking lessons from David I had played the piano very casually for around 5-6 years without lessons. I wasn’t really improving so I decided to get seek professional training.

I feel so lucky I was able to have David as my teacher. He was able to help me learn Liebestraum no. 3 right from our first lesson. This was a piece I thought I wouldn’t be able to play until I had taken lessons for 5 + years. He was able to help me get about 1/3 of the way through the piece in a month which was much faster than I ever anticipated.

David has his own methodologies that he teaches from which really make all the difference in lessons. From this I was able to learn how to play pieces in a shorter amount of time. His methodologies also make practicing fun and keep things from getting boring.

I was able to learn a lot about musicality. We talked about dynamics, shaping, balance, and voicing. This was something I didn’t know changed the way others hear the piece. It really helped my music sound much more professional.

Overall David is a wonderful teacher and I would recommend him to anyone considering taking piano lessons. He’s got a great talent for helping others get passionate about piano and gain confidence in their skills. David also responded to messages extremely fast which makes communication with him easy.

If I could give him 10/5 stars I would :)"

Lauren D.

“I was looking for a piano teacher to help me get started again after a 10 year hiatus and I’m so glad I found David! I’m just 6 months, he was able to get me to perfection with my first goal piece. David brings a unique methodology that has helped me advance in my piano playing faster than I ever thought I could. Through my practice with him, I’ve learned more about piano theory, practice techniques, and classical music than I did in ten years of playing as a child. On top of that, David is a pleasure to work with. He’s extremely communicative, punctual, and accommodating. I look forward to my weekly lessons with David and participating in group recitals and studio classes for many seasons to come!"

Miryam A.

David is fantastic. He is an amazing teacher and resource, and I unequivocally recommend him.

I played piano for several years growing up but when I started working with David, I hadn't touched a piano in 20 years. Although I had a decent amount of experience, I set modest goals for myself to learn a few intermediate pieces for my own enjoyment. With David's encouragement and instruction I've been able to wildly surpass my own expectations for what I thought I was capable of playing. I've learned my dream piece, Chopin's Ballade No.1, as well as other pieces that were daunting before David helped me learn them (Rachmaninoff's Etude Op. 33 No.4, Chopin Etude Opus 10 No. 9, Bach's Partita #1).

David has a unique approach to helping you learn, memorize, and correct your mistakes. It involves learning sections of pieces in small sets and then stringing them together like a patchwork quilt, rather than trying to practice the whole piece all at once. David also emphasizes learning these smaller sets in reverse, so you practice the ends of measures, which ordinarily get less attention as people usually play from the beginning and then stop when they make a mistake. He also teaches "spaced repetition," which involves practicing areas and then coming back to them later on, which is more effective than repeating the same few measures over and over again. David's approach has helped me learn pieces much more quickly and effectively than I can remember learning them as a kid.

I've also learned so much about the musicality in my playing, more than I ever did growing up. One thing David emphasizes are huge contrasts between loud and soft sections (he says they should be as different as night and day), as well as constant shaping of measures even within loud and soft areas, so that you always hear a rise or fall in volume. These huge contrasts and continuous shaping are what makes music interesting to hear. I can feel how much better my playing sounds when I pay close attention to these dynamics and shaping.

I've also received great advice on technical solutions for difficult pieces. David has suggested several techniques to help me relax my hands and arm, and to avoid holding notes longer than necessary. These technical suggestions were invaluable for helping me with Chopin's etude Op. 10 No. 9, which involves large reaches between notes with the left hand. I often find David can hear things in my playing that I would not be able to pick myself. I find his advice invaluable in spotting mistakes and errors, as well as musical suggestions, that have helped me learn pieces better and faster.

In addition to his lessons, I feel part of a welcoming community of students who form David's studio. He holds studio classes at no cost four times a year where students play for each other and offer advice and suggestions on improving. I look forward to these sessions both to improve my own playing and to encourage other students in the studio. Students of all levels play in studio classes and I have seen David help advanced students and complete beginners.

The studio has recitals twice a year. I never performed my pieces when I played growing up so it was challenging and exciting to perform for an audience. David had lots of great advice for handling the emotional rigors of playing in front of other people under the spotlight. I had the opportunity to play my piece at Steinway Hall in Manhattan for about 60 people which was one of the greatest thrills I've had playing piano. I've now amassed about 40 minutes of repertoire and am working toward putting together a one hour solo program, something I didn't think possible when I started.

David has been a patient and eager teacher. He is easy to reach and responds very quickly when I send him a message. I feel he is invested in my success and wants to see me reach my potential as a pianist.

I feel fortunate to have found David when I was searching for an instructor and I am sure you will too.

“I have been taking lessons with David for about 22 months now. I am a music teacher by profession. When I started the lesson, I was leaving a school where my teaching experience there has negatively influeced my interest in playing the piano. Music has always been part of my life and I wanted to be able to pick up playing again without the pressure that "playing the piano is part of my job."

David was responsive and understanding. He offered me lots of ideas on how I could start again and the also the opportunity to join studio class where I got to hear stories of other adult teachers and how their experience was like learning a challenging piece of music and preparing for a performance. I was hesitant at first. In my mindset as a perfectionist was not ready to play until my playing was "perfect." David coached on the mental emotional aspect of performance and gave his students many opportunities to play for each other before the studio class. Even as an experienced pianist who has played for most of her life, I felt anxious about preparing for a performance, and I learned that that feeling is normal part of any performance. I was given the tools to prepare for it mentally and emotionally.

Mental practice was one of the most useful tools I learned while I was preparing for performance. Essentially, I am asking to train my mind to play the music WITHOUT the piano, with as many details as I can imagine in my mind (the sound, the notes on the sheet, the physical sensation in my finger, hands and wrist, etc.) It allowed me to see where in music I lack detail and attention, and therefore could not remember it from memory.

David's specific methodology is very detailed and can easily be taken in small steps, and he always takes time to explain to me his reasoning for his process (steps that we take in when practicing and learning a new piece of music). David always encourages me to think in long-term goals and short-term goals. I felt like I am more prepared and ready to take on more demanding and challenging pieces.

I was very inspired by David's success and am now starting to build my own piano studio. Now I am able to share music with my students with joy and have been incorporating methodologies that I learned from David into my own teaching. Our business training has given me an opportunity to see piano teaching as a business from the lens of a business owner. He has helped me build my own online business profile and continued to support me in many aspects of this business entrepreneurship. His mentorship has be invaluable for me as a pianist and as a teacher."

Hui-Wen V.

"I've been studying piano with David for about 7 months now, and have had a great experience. I'm an adult "restarter" who took piano lessons as a child and stopped for nearly 30 years before picking back up again. Within a few months, I've learned techniques that I never got from my childhood piano years- shaping, dynamics, balance, and the nuance of different kinds of sounds. He is a very detail-oriented person and held me to a high standard- I kind of wish my past teachers have been this way. Better late than never! The first piece we worked on was my last highest piece as a 7th grader, and within a few lessons I was playing better than I ever did. I also learned his very logical methodology of learning new pieces, which is backed by brain science on how we learn and retain information. He has also helped me improve in all aspects of performance- performing in new situations (new instrument, cold hands, etc.), addressing memory slips and nerves. I'm very shy about performing, and he gave me just enough push to get going. He provides lots of opportunities for students perform in front of each other, in studio classes, and in larger recitals. Nowadays our lessons have shifted to online, and in addition to what we were doing before, we are also working on music theory so I can become a more well-rounded musician. Overall, working with David has opened up my eyes to my own potential and it really motivates me to work harder to become a better pianist!"

“I reached out to Instructor David back in December 2019 when I decided to take formal lessons after finishing Simply Piano (Piano app). Instructor David was very responsive and got back to me the same evening. He scheduled me in for a trial lesson and even answered some of my unusual questions on what I can do to prepare for the lesson even though it was a trial lesson. During the trial lesson, Instructor David asked me about my background, my reason for taking piano lessons, and also explained to me his methodologies. I was convinced that this would be the right teacher to guide me on my journey.

As an adult learner, I was lacking confidence on whether I can fulfill my dream of playing the piano fluently since I was under the preconception that you have to start at an early age. I told instructor David that my goal piece was Fur Elise and Maple Leaf Rag. Right away, he told me to start learning Fur Elise and bring in the sheet music for the first lesson. Once Instructor David realize that I have the ability to play the piece he encourage me to work on my next goal piece, Maple Leaf Rag. I didn’t feel I have enough technique, rhythm, or experience but he insisted I give it a try and following his methodology which include the metronome practice at 3 different speeds, the 1-2 SH and TH measure sets, planning writing out the musical details and fingering for each piece. His methods were efficient.

I started the lesson with 3 years total accumulation of self taught piano playing with no formal training. I took 5 months of lessons with instructor David. With his teaching and encouragement, I was able to learn all 48 Major and Minor scales, all arpeggios including 1st and 2nd inversion based on his theory lesson and methods of practice. His 40 piece challenge help me learn 15 classical piano pieces from Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and Debussy.

What I value most of Instructor David is his integrity, professionalism, experience, and ability to shift his teaching towards the students learning style and strength. Although I’m no where near perfect in my learnings he would always be patient enough to explain to me if I was off track or not practicing correctly. He would not let me sacrifice impeccable rhythm, musicality, music shaping, dynamics, and accuracy. Being able to play a piece is one thing, with instructor David he always make sure I learn the piece properly and able to perform it under different circumstances. He also spend a lot of time to help me overcome my lack of experience and personal fear learning piano as an adult learner. I just finished my first recital and experience what it was like to prepare for a recital like a professional pianist. I am forever grateful for the wonderful experience. I can say his teachings has made the awareness of musicality second nature to me. Every time I play a piece of music, I can’t stop thinking about the need to be musical and bring the piece alive!

Instructor David also host studio classes where other students of different level meet to experience what it is like to learn piano on all different levels. I had a positive experience as his student demographic is very diverse. Age reaching from teenager to senior citizen. It provided me with comfort and reassurance.

The biggest accomplishment that I feel would be an injustice not to share is instructor David helping me learn my dream piece that I felt was years out of reach, Fantasie Impromptu by Chopin. After the first month, he told me to start learning the piece which I was resistant at first since I was already having trouble with the poly rhythms of Nocturne in C#m, and the syncopated rhythms of Maple Leaf Rag. I also struggle with different rhythm variety of Sonata K545. Despite all of this, instructor David made sure I start learning poly rhythms and even with a slow start he took the time to teach me over my lesson time once he saw that I was on the brink of getting the hang of the idea. I broke through a plateau that I didn’t feel I could break through so soon being an average person throughout my life. It gave me a big confidence boost. Using the same methods I progress weekly and eventually performed all the pieces, Fur Elise, Sonata K545, Nocturne C#M, Maple Leaf Rag, and Fantasie Impromptu at the recital from memory. I was planning to learn other pieces such as Turkish March and Clair De Lune along the way, but was told to put on hold until I made sure my pieces were as prepared and musical as possible before the recital. I learned a valuable lesson of not to be over confident or accidentally disrespect the performance process due to inexperience. He is always sensitive in delivering the message in an easily acceptable way. I feel my dreams are within reach! Thank you Instructor David!"

Peter P.

“I began working with David as a total beginner in August of 2021. I could not read sheet music, either. We began my learning experience with a sonata by Scarlatti, K531 in E-Major. I was able to utilize David's unique methodologies right from the beginning which led to rapid progress. Namely, adding in reverse, spaced repetition and mental practice. After two months or so of practice, we began practicing for a recital in December. During this time I was able to attend two studio classes in which I also performed. I was able to observe students of all experience levels perform and learn from the critiques given by both students and David after each performance. As the date of the recital grew closer, we began performing for other students. David implemented this strategy as a way to manage nervousness before the actual recital. I found this to be extremely beneficial because as David emphasized, having the "performance mindset" during practice performances was key to preparing to perform for an audience. I was very pleased with my performance during the recital as a complete beginner performing a difficult piece. I was able to implement different elements of musicality in my perform as well: dynamics and shaping to name a few. David is an amazing teacher. Not only is he easy to reach and very responsive, his ability to analyze the root of an issue and then strategize to create a solution is unmatched. I am looking forward to continuing my progress as one of his students."

Oscar C.

“I started lessons with David in the middle of November of 2019 as a beginner. I've had a strong desire to play the piano for years with some goal pieces I wanted to be able to play one day. Using David's methodology, and with his guidance in just under 10 lessons, I am almost able to play one goal piece I would've never thought I could even attempt this early on. In general David's approach, in my experience so far, is to focus on learning technique and effective practicing, and starts introducing other elements, such as nuanced musicality and theory, on an as needed basis. Additionally He provides / recommends resources, such as books or even apps, for music theory or technique, so the student is empowered to enhance their learning on their own. He is acutely aware of my needs as a beginner, and will focus on areas that will make the most immediate impact to my technique while also ensuring that I am taking the right steps to solidify my understanding of music in the long term. David is deeply invested in the pedagogical process, and has a clear passion for imparting knowledge to others. He is an exceptional teacher, and I would recommend him to anyone who has a passion for playing piano regardless of their skill level."

David is an excellent teacher and musician, and I really look forward to our 90min sessions each week. I played the piano for approximately 1 year as a child, and decided to resume learning this year in my 30s - I've been taking lessons for about 7 months now. I originally began with self study using a few different books that had great reviews online for adult learning. However, these were very theory focussed as opposed to performance-based, and the pieces within these books were tailored to that specific lesson / assumed skill - in short they were linear. As do most, I had goal pieces in mind but did not know how to even begin approaching these, let alone playing them musically. Meanwhile, my fiancee began taking lessons with David around the same time as I began my self-study, and after a couple weeks, her progression was significantly faster to the point where she was already playing large portions of hear goal pieces. I had the benefit of hearing/watching (out of Facetime frame) during a couple lessons given we're in an apartment. I noted immediately that his lessons/plan with students was entirely tailored to their goals and not linear - lessons involved solid logical methodology instruction focussed on solving measures and sections of pieces, technique instruction, discussion of musical theory with a bit of background, all with the intention of performing for yourself, family, friends, and others. His school of thought is to train with a performance mentality (much of what I could relate to training for various sports), which materializes as performing your ongoing pieces for him or other students during each lesson, studio classes and recitals (virtually for now).

So I began taking lessons with David, and from day 1, we have been working on learning certain and now perfecting other goal pieces. This was all possible due to his logical methodology of deconstructing and adding together small sets or measures to build up to playing the piece. Throughout our lessons, we also added varying levels of musicality to my performance. I previously did not understand how important dynamics, shaping, and balance were to the sound and harmony of pieces when performed. These have been critical parts of our my learning progression and made playing that much more enjoyable for me.

In summary, David approaches his teaching at a very personal level as opposed to a "pre-set" academic style. I am very goals and results oriented, and his tailoring of lessons and teaching to my learning style and goals has made piano a pleasure to continue learning. I have noticed that my lessons are different from my fiancees, as I have different goals, interests, and learning style.

I have nothing but positive things to say about working with David, and look forward to continuing to learn from him while building my repertoire of pieces. Highly recommended. Thanks David!

“David is a fantastic piano teacher and a pleasure to work with. I’ve been studying virtually with David in 1.5 hour weekly lessons since near the start of the pandemic (about 6 months now). Previously I studied piano for about a year in high school. Within 6 months I’ve learned much more than I could have hoped in this time (and much more than in the year of study with other teachers) - including already performing Menuet in G Major by Bach, Meryton Townhall by Henry Purcell and Georgiana by Dario Marinelli (from the Pride & Prejudice soundtrack), and currently working on my first Debussy prélude. David has enabled me to move past what I initially viewed as long term stretch goals and turn them into short to medium term goals. When I initially began my lessons, my fiancé, who had intended to teach himself with a combination of piano books, training videos and applications, quickly assessed both the quality of David’s lessons and my progression working with David and began taking lessons with David as well (we have now begun learning duets in addition to our solo pieces). David is both an excellent piano player and teacher, and has devoted much study and practice into preparing teaching methodologies that enable his students to progress rapidly and to develop good habits from the outset. To that end, David teaches you how to teach yourself to learn pieces and to practice most efficiently, recognizing that we are all short on time. In so doing, he takes into account your own personal tendencies, strengths and weaknesses and helps you to develop plans how to proceed outside of lesson time. David also provides a wealth of opportunities to perform for other students, and teaches a performance mindset so that his students are ready at any time to perform the pieces in their current repertoire. (This performance mindset is also transferable to work and other aspects of life.) I’ve performed over zoom and FaceTime for over a dozen students during my lessons, and that is not to mention the studio session that we participated in last month in which David’s students all performed (which also served to help teach listening critically to performances), and a forthcoming recital. David also teaches his students musicality in performing, and I can attest to this quality stemming from his teaching as I’ve now heard so many of his students perform. As David noted in one of my lessons, in a simple piece a beginner can sound like a professional if the player performs with musicality. David also pays great attention to detail, which shows both in our correspondence and during lessons. He was extremely prompt to respond to my initial Thumbtack inquiry and communicating with David has been extremely easy ever since."

“I've been learning the piano for about a month now and was fortunate enough to cross paths with David about a week into that journey. In the 3 lessons I've had with him, my competency has progressed to the point where I can realistically tackle the first movement of the Moonlight Sonata, due largely to the comprehensive practice methods I've learned from David and the confidence I've gained from the pace of my growth because of them. Id recommend David to piano players of any level as its apparent just speaking with him that hes a master of his craft and emanates a passion for piano that helps to inspire me to really want to keep improving."

“I highly recommend David as a piano teacher, especially for adult beginners. He helped me rapidly improve my technical proficiency by having me work on a goal piece immediately while introducing the necessary theoretical knowledge as needed. This approach is great for adult beginners as it allows you have fun playing what you want immediately instead of wasting months on slowly working through beginner pieces. As someone brand new to piano, he was able to coach me into being able to play 1min30s of my goal piece for his studio class within 4-5 lessons.

I can also attest to the effectiveness of his methodologies. David teaches you how to break down difficult sections and efficient ways of practicing in order to learn new pieces quickly. In addition, his experience/skill as a teacher was readily apparent in my lessons with him. During one of my one hour sessions with David, I was able to progress past a section I was stuck on in my personal practice for a week. Also, he is also easy to reach for questions outside of lesson hours and will help you develop a plan to achieve your piano goals.

If you are in the market for a piano teacher, consider taking a trial lesson (1 hour at a discounted rate) with David to experience his methods firsthand. I was not disappointed and I don't think you will be either."

“David has been an incredible teacher always pushing me to further myself on the instrument. From spacial repetition, to interleaving, overlapping, and many other difficult to learn piano concepts and techniques, David will always curate a method that works for his students. I was initially at a children’s level but was thrown into a piece “Slow Dancing In The Dark” that I couldn’t even imagine I’d be able to play and am nearly 3/4ths of the way through the piece. I have since learned an immense amount and will continue to do so as I am pushed to learn more and more. David has guided me through even little intricacies like your state of mind when playing, being relaxed, and detail. The studio is a nice environment that is the perfect place to play and David will always invite you to show off your skills you’ve learned at things like recitals and events. The best thing about David is that he will approach each person on a case by case basis as there is no one way to learn, so he will help you figure out the fastest way for YOU to learn and that is invaluable."

“This is a long review, so I'll say at the start that I think David is a great and effective piano teacher!!! He has developed a methodology that allows his students to efficiently learn to practice so that they are able play their absolute best - whether you just started or if you've been playing for a long time. David is also a remarkable performer - one can feel the emotion he puts into his playing. Hopefully this review helps you decide whether you would like to be one of his students.

I first reached out to David to see if he was taking on new students in Oct 2019. During our initial phone conversation, I was taken by his passion for music, teaching, and performing. I was a little apprehensive about my trial lesson; I wanted to impress him with my playing, however I had only been playing for a relatively small amount of time, and felt I needed a lot of improvement. I arrived for my lesson, played a few pieces and then we discussed my playing, my goals, and what I expected from the lessons. It was an amazing discussion - interactive and free flowing! We spoke about David's philosophy on teaching and how his structured methodology provides students with the capability to solve for issues/blocks during their own piano practice. I was intrigued, excited, and started taking lessons soon after.

In Studio Lessons: Part of David's methodology breaks each piece into sets, you play each set (which can be as small as two notes) for a small period of time, then you go on to the next set (regardless of whether you "passed" the previous set) and then come back and play the previous set(s) again, and so on. Over time, dynamics, shaping, balancing, voicing, etc. are incorporated ... until you have completed the piece. It is all very logical ... I am amazed at how much of the piece I am playing has been memorized (never did that before)! I am looking forward to learning how to incorporate more of David's methodology into my practice sessions to become a better pianist.

Virtual/Remote Lessons: Shortly after the COVID-19 stay-at-home order was issued, David started to offer remote lessons. I am very happy to be able to continue learning the piano during these stressful times. David's virtual/remote lessons are just as effective as his in studio lessons. There is a difference however ... I send my repertoire to David before the lesson so that he can provide feedback (mark up the score with comments about the musicality). Virtual/Remote lessons are basically the same as the in studio lessons: If I have questions, David explains and/or plays the piano to demonstrate. I do hope he continues to offer virtual/remote lessons, as it would be great for those times I feel like I may be coming down with something!

Theory Lessons: David has provided me with music theory lessons. Having never taken theory before, I am amazed at how much knowing the theory helps me to better understand the music I am playing!

Adult Studio Class: David believes that performing for others helps us all become better pianists. He holds the Adult Studio Class frequently. These classes are low key and optional, we perform a piece of our choosing, and get feedback from both David and other students. David guides us on how to listen critically and how to provide feedback. I am astounded at how amazing David's students play. Some of them have been playing for only a year or two and sound like they have been playing much, much longer. Their musicality is amazing and they all credit it to David's methodology and teaching!

Recitals: All David's students are invited to play at the Recitals. I have only attended one, and was impressed with the age range of David's students (4-5 years to much older) ... they all sounded remarkable. It was a wonderful experience."

David is an excellent piano instructor. I have played guitar for nearly 30 years and wanted to understand music better as well as learn to play piano and help my 8 year old with lessons. David's teaching style is unique and interesting. I have thoroughly enjoyed the sessions we have had and look forward to what the future holds. I recommend David to any student, at any age or musical experience.

“I was transitioning into teaching piano full time when I first started my lessons with David. He is helping me to further improve my playing and we also discuss about pedagogical problem. His logistical method approach in piano learning has been working wonders not just on me but on my students as well.

My favourite part is still the online recitals and the studio classes. That's where I get to hear a lot of his student play. He is also training most of his student in giving constructive comments. That is a very useful skill which helps in self evaluation which can be applied into daily practice and keep them effective.

We also talk about the business and manging part of a studio, which is probably on a more business side. Hopefully I will be able to start my own studio sometime in the future.

If improving more in a shorter period of time is your goal, I genuinely believe David will be a good match. He is super responsive, fun and definetly knows his stuff well!

Hope you will have a wonderful journey learning with David too!"

“I began studying with David a little over five months ago and it has been awesome. I have many years of prior musical experience, albeit not playing piano or classical music, and his lessons have already had a significant impact on how I approach music. By applying his methodologies, I can learn and memorize new pieces much more quickly than ever before. I also feel more confident in my ability to hold deliberate and focused practice sessions, through which his concept of "mental practice" has proven extraordinarily useful.

David puts a lot of emphasis on teaching you to think critically and make your own decisions. Before my first recital, we worked on a Bach piece (WTC I prelude 3 C# Major) that pushed the limits of my technical ability. Rather than "fix" my technique on certain passages, he outlined a specific set of tools that he uses to master technically demanding phrases. I was able to play the piece much more comfortably after applying these tools to the most difficult phrases. Moving forward, I have a much clearer idea of how to acquire better technique as I further expand my repertoire. David consistently provides useful insights like these in lessons and you will find yourself becoming a much more self-sufficient musician as you incorporate his advice into your practice. As of now, we are working on a Chopin etude (Op. 25 no. 2), which didn't feel like a remote possibility before we began working together, but only speaks to how quickly we've progressed.

Finally, David puts a fair amount of work into cultivating a community among his students. There are many opportunities to perform for one another via "studio classes," where students are invited to provide commentary after each individual performance. Frequent performances are a very important element in learning and developing as a musician, and this was another reason I chose to work with David."

“David is without a doubt the best piano instructor I have had to date. Prior to meeting David I had been playing for around 18 months with a few different instructors that just did not quite fit. Since starting with him I am doing 90 minute lessons, which primarily is focused around teaching me how to teach myself. He's developed a systematic approach to learning more difficult pieces to less experienced pianists such as myself; the result is a clear payoff. I am able to learn in between lessons by actually playing the pieces I want to play. He uses specific memory techniques like spaced repetition and interleaving in order to help truly have a deeper understand of the piece that I am playing, instead of just knowing where my fingers should go! I did my first musical performance under him, something I never thought I would do. This forced me to push my musical ability faster then I normally would have. Coming up in June we are working to prepare 3 Chopin Preludes for our next recital. His approach to goal setting and expectations is really what will set you apart from others in the long-term. I am absolutely satisfied with him as my instructor and plan to continue using him well into the future. Oh and he memorized all 27 Chopin Etudes in six months during 2020, now THAT is somebody I want to learn from."

As a teacher myself, I was interested in learning different methodologies and teaching styles. David’s profile caught my attention and I had to reach out. He stands out, way above the rest in a number of ways. David is professional, always responds very quickly, and truly cares about you and your progress— a rarity in this busy world. David makes you feel very supported and is available to discuss details about your training as needed. Despite how busy he is, he makes sure to feel every student has what they need, and then some. His extensive knowledge in piano and pedagogy is sure to put ANY student on not just the right track, but the fast track as well. If you are on the fence, needing to choose between a handful of teachers, look no further.

“David is an amazing piano instructor. His knowledge and ability to teach remotely was key to assisting me with learning to play my goal piece. I’ve been a piano student on and off throughout my life and this was the fist time I felt I was actually learning and excelling. One of the biggest learning methods that helped me was David’s notational system that would break down the notes and then piece them together. Overall it was a great experience that helped me come back to learning and practicing the piano again!"

Lama S.

“David is extremely knowledgeable in classical piano. As an advanced student, I was able to learn the 1st Ballade by Chopin and perform it at a pretty good level from memory with his guidance. I also learned parts of the 4th Ballade and some memory techniques as well. David is very organized, responsive, and professional. Overall I had a good experience and think motivated advanced students can get great value if they want meaningful coaching on very difficult pieces."

Darren L.

"David Chang is an excellent teacher. I studied piano for 7 years when I am a teenager and decided to begin it again near 30s. He developed his own methodologies, such as sets, adding in reverse, spaced repetition. These knowledge are pretty new for me and help me a lot for in improving both memory and technical. He is very patient to answer your questions and help you to solve the difficulties you faced. High recommend!"

Weirong T.

“David is real professional. When you have your first lesson, david will discuss your playing, your long term and shor term goals, and what you expected from all lessons moving forward. David's advice and methodologies are VERY effective. Like many other reviews say. I can see how his other beginner students are playing hard piano pieces. His methodologies are based on scientific findings and is based on science. It's not just a random thing he made up without any backing to it. You are encourage to play your favorite song at the hardest level even if you are a beginner at piano and using his methodologies, you will be impressive how far you will accomplish. That's if YOU pratice at least 2-3 hours a day using his methodologies. But, David is understanding if you can't practice that long because not everyone has the open availability to practice that long each day. Each week he will ask you if you practiced and if you say you didn't have the time to do so, you can hear in his voice and attitude that he really cares that you practice. He does not brush it off like "Ok whatever". His mannerisms, passion, piano skills, methodologies, and and his professionalism set him apart from the rest. If you are a beginner and it is your first instrument, I want you to contact David right away and even if you are experienced piano player you will benefit as well. I have only been playing for about 3-4 months and already completed more than 10 short term piano pieces and 1 and a half pages of demons by image dragons at the advanced level and 5 pages(full song, easy version) of perfect by ed sheeran(I wish I would have picked the intermediate version if perfect, since I now know his methodologies are very effective) . If you were to look the demons piano music sheet that I have you would know that a beginner should not be playing this song and is incapable to learning such a piece because of the difficulty of the song and me being a beginner. Or you would assume that I have been playing for years HaHa! Using David's methodologies with demons, I was able to play the first page in a couple of weeks. I still need to learn on balancing and shaping to be more musically when playing piano. David is the man you go to to start or advanced your piano playing."

David is a very patient, knowledgeable, positive, friendly, encouraging teacher with have high standard and a very talented, experienced, awe-inspiring pianist.

My 3 years old daughter (turning 4 soon) and I are both taking lessons from David for around a month now. We enjoyed his lesson so much that I increased my daughter’s hour from 1 to 2 hours a week. He’s been very patient and good with kids that my daughter enjoys and loves to play the piano.

David’s teaching methodologies are very effective. He showed us how to practice in sets, measures, adding in reverse, spaced repetition, etc. We progressed quickly and it exceeded my expectation. Within a month I was able to play a piece (Castle in the Sky) that I never thought would be possible for me as a total beginner in music. My daughter also learned a few pieces like Old McDonald, Mary had a little lamb, and she’s beginning to challenge harder pieces from her favorite movie Frozen. David is very very good in explaining his methodologies and a lot of good suggestion so you will know exactly how to practice on your own or how to coach your kid to practice.

On top of these the students also have a semi-annual recital opportunity at Steinway. Students would play their long term or goal pieces. This is a very good opportunity for anyone to show their achievement and gain stage performance experience. David will coach us how to perform from start to end. David teaches with his acoustic Grand Piano in his very clean and cozy apartment that I’m sure everyone will feel comfortable in.

Lastly, David is very helpful even off lesson hours. We would text him any questions we have and he would promptly reply. He’s also very understanding and flexible when there’s schedule conflict or sometimes the kid is sick. We’ve been enjoying his lessons very much and I would highly recommend David to anyone who wants to learn or get better in playing Piano.

“At first, I was skeptical about looking for a piano teacher because I was sort of half-convinced I could learn on my own. In the end though, because of a friend joining me and the half-price trial lesson, I decided to give having an actual teacher a chance.

Looking back now, even though it's only been a little less than a month, I am so glad I made that decision. Some of the good traits in a teacher that I saw in David were apparent even before meeting him. He responded to my text messages literally within a few minutes and also detailed his policies right away so I was able to get started ASAP.

As a teacher, David is patient, not overbearing and very good at breaking his teaching methodologies down so that anyone can understand them. These qualities are so helpful for beginners because I can imagine they may experience anxiety or nervousness learning something new for the first time in front of an experienced player. Luckily, I think I was able to get along well with David pretty immediately so any anxiety I did feel faded quickly.

For my learning experience so far, I am definitely surprised at how quickly I was able to progress. The teaching methods that David explained helped me to break past roadblocks in the first piece that I chose to work on. (Side note: I love how David focuses on getting you to actually learn your goal pieces right away.) And although I did not play perfectly, I was able to get to a level where I could perform and play for one of David's student group classes!

In conclusion, I would recommend David to piano players at any level because in addition to his enormous amount of skill and teaching methodologies, he is able to offer a fun, engaging, and exciting way of learning piano."

“There's just so much to say about David as a teacher, a professional and a musician. We have only started lessons with David but both my husband and daughter are taking lessons and have greatly improved since the very first class.

To start, my daughter is a 5 year old rambunctious little girl that I was fearful would not be able to sit through a single lesson. I had nothing to fear. David was amazingly patient with her. Our other fear that she would not be interested in piano was also addressed by David. He was able to challenge her to play at her speed and level. Unlike other teachers that dragged onto position, posture, and repetition. David focused on her abilities, and provided positive encouragement which helped create an impassioned interest in piano while slowly addressing posture, position, relaxation and repetition.

My husband has limited time to practice but had always desired to learn the piano. After convincing him to give it a try with David. David's adult studio classes/recitals/and performance opportunities added additional motivational drive for him to pursue piano as a hobby.

David is able to help both my husband and my daughter break down their learning capabilities into segmented individual sections which sped up their ability to pick up and learn musical pieces and musical theory. He also advises me on how to assist my daughter in her daily practices.

What we love about David's lessons are not only the educational theory and skill set we are learning, or the ability to break down segments to improve the rate of learning, also not only the patience and kindness that he shows both my husband and daughter. It is a very large combination of all of these aspects, but primarily it is his love of music and his love of helping others to achieve personal goals, and his strong encouragement to help his students develop passions for music.

We highly recommend David as a piano instructor for any level of students that are interested in Piano"

Dolly L.

"I am an experienced pianist, but have taken a number of years off to focus on my career. Decided to work with David as a teacher to get back into training and to prepare for a solo recital. David's lessons are very valuable and suitable for pianists at any level. I started off at 1 hour per week but have increased to 2 hours per week because of the value. More specifically, I have (within 2 months) made great process on my ability to add shaping and balance to pieces. I brought a rusty version of the Minute Waltz to him about 6-7 weeks ago that he has helped me bring to performance level. I also feel that my ability to critically listen has dramatically improved during the time. David also teaches me piano theory to get my understanding of piano up to my playing ability. Lastly, David is incredibly easy to reach by phone or text and will field questions from me about my practice throughout the week. It is incredibly helpful to have a teacher that responsive and committed to my learning."

Isa W.

I was referred to David by a former student of his in Jan 2019. In the past 4 months, I have had a great experience learning from David, and I am thankful to have made the choice to learn the piano with such a stellar professional. Over the first few weeks, as a total beginner, David patiently walked me through the basics of music theory, and even helped me out with picking out an instrument that I could afford. His best quality lies in being able to understand my level of understanding, guiding me through the various pitfalls in my learning process, and providing steady and thoughtful feedback. His method is a mix of traditional music teaching coupled with tips and tricks that he's learned along the way over his career. He is approachable as a teacher, and lets me ask questions that feed my curiosity. He is open to letting me pick up classical or popular music, and works together on goals to learn a few personal favorite pieces. He even helped me think through the process of finding time to learn during my busy schedule. He is quick to notice errors in my practice, but is also quick to give positive reinforcement on things that are working well. Technique, relaxation, memorization, problem solving mindset, musicality all come naturally to him during the course of his lessons. I recommend learning from David in whichever stage of your music career you are in.

Angad G.

“David is an incredibly professional and a very knowledgable teacher, who helped structure lessons based on my own individual goals and interests related not just to piano but to music and music theory more general.

I did work on individual pieces and his unique methodologies helped me to very quickly learn and piece together my solo piano piece. But more importantly for me, his ability to teach music theory allowed me to quickly understand chords, chord progressions and jump right into composing my own small pieces, which was my main goal for the lessons.

We also spent some time working on the concept of improvisation, which was great for creating ideas in general and as an aid to composition. Something that I wouldn't have thought of on my own or known where to begin accessing resources.

Finally, he's super accessible and quick to respond to questions about music or the piano, which makes him a great resource in and out of the lesson itself. If you're looking to find an expert pianist and a fantastic teacher, you can't do better than David!"

Killian C.

“It’s never easy to pick your piano teacher, especially when you’re a beginner. David demonstrated a great deal of professionalism and patience in the first (trial) lesson. Before I met David, I already tried few teachers and was very uncertain about whether I should begin my piano journey or not. Not only is David experienced in performing but he’s also dedicated in teaching, and he’s passionate about finding the right method for each student. He’s a trustworthy teacher who’s relentless on sharing his own musical experiences and teaching his methodology in great details. How to relax your arms, how to put your weight while practicing, how to read music,(as a beginner) how to overcome obstacles physically and psychologically. Through his methods, I was able to approach music more efficiently. After very few lessons, I began to feel some improvement and stated to feel the joy in solving problems. And now I’m increasing my lessons from one-hour to two-hour per week. This is definitely the best musical decision I’ve made and I’d recommend David to anyone who’s interested in learning piano and music theory."

Megumi O.

“I began taking lessons with David after I had already been learning piano for several months. I had improved quickly at first, but it soon became apparent that without a teacher who could offer specific guidance on how to efficiently work through the challenges in the music I was learning, I'd be unable to continue to make meaningful progress. David has helped me with all of this and more—I've learned not only how to practice in a more methodical way that has yielded steady improvement, but also how to add expressiveness to my playing with a level of care and detail that I hadn't even considered before. Highly recommended."

Rob G.

I am very pleased to have David as my piano teacher. I commute 1.5 hours to my lessons with him and the long commute is worth every minute to be able to get his expert review and teaching on my piano skills. I’ve been working with David for about 6 weeks and I’ve already been able to work my through playing most of the first page of the Final Fantasy 7 Main Theme. Most instructors would not have bothered to give a complete beginner the time and patience to work through this piece. I’m really glad David has taken me up on the experience, with patience and thoughtful feedback, to learn music I’m interested in.

Ahmed A.

“David is tremendously talented while having the unique ability to support students at all levels. His patience, knowledge, and ability to guide based on individual need is unparalleled. I’m please to provide a stellar recommendation and am open to personally discussing a reference with anyone considering his services."

Michael K.

“David is an excellent teacher who uses a wide range of techniques to improve your piano playing skills. I found that my ability to play more precisely and expressively have quickly improved due to his lessons on shaping and expression. Furthermore, I found the studio class that he put on for his students was useful for getting over performance jitters. I look forward to continuing lesson with him in the future."

Zarek D.

“As an adult piano re-starter, it's a pleasure to work with David on refining my self-taught music pieces. I really appreciate that he offers professional and constructive suggestions on both technical and musical side, which are quite inspiring in shaping my music journey so far."

Bilan Y.

“David is an excellent piano teacher and I am very happy I signed on with him. I had about 9 years of piano classes when I grew up and now I came back to it after about 15 years of a break. In the first four lessons we covered shaping, balance, voicing, pedaling, dynamic contrasts, mental practice. He also offers a free studio class with his students and a recital. It is fun and challenging at the same time and i can see my playing improve steadily."

Martin B.

First of all, I started playing piano from ground 0 as a 36 yr old adult. I it a childhood dream. I found this app and read David’s description about his course and compared to other instructors. By that time I knew he is perfectionist. After the class tryout, I have been enjoying to have David as my instructor. Ive been having 4h weekly classes with him and commute 1,5h(pre coronavirus lockdown) just to have him as my instructor. I live in NJ. The class is worth every penny you spend. Even after the corona virus lockdown, his online class is as good as a regular in person session(and I was a bit skeptical in the begining). He picks up my mistakes, or the smallest details through online classes just as good as in person. I got a very busy and unpredictable schedule and David is willing to work with me to help on my needs. The only thing he asks in return is commitment to learn and follow his instructions. His teaching methodolody is Another thing I love. It really works even on difficult pieces! His class involves music theory, scales, Gold piece( piece you have as a long term goal) and a 40 small piece challenge. He teaches how to become an independent learner and He will interact in the most professional way. Piano isnt easy to learn. It requires a lot of dedication, patience and overcoming obstacles. If you want to increase your learning curve, David is the right guy.

Zafar S.

"My 11-year-old son and I started lessons with David a few weeks ago and it has been a great experience. My son is a beginner and I re-started piano, which I played for a few years as a kid. David is teaching us challenging and helpful practicing techniques and emphasizes working on developing musical details in our pieces. He is a great, versatile teacher who motivates his students well. I highly recommend him for both kids and adults.

Fanni K.

"I played the piano from ages 5-15, and after a 10-year gap, I was a little scared going back into it. Nevertheless working with David has been such a great experience I couldn’t be happier I decided to go back to the keys. I brought him my original composition and David has helped me develop it to its full extent. On top of that, we’ve been working on a few classical pieces from my childhood that I’ve decided to relearn. Shaping, balance, critical listening, and expression are some of the things we have focused on that have really brought out the best in my playing. I’m looking forward to the recital later this month. Having gone to the first studio class, I got to meet some of David’s other students, and it was a great experience. On top of all that I’m learning, I also feel part of a community. Highly recommend David as a piano teacher, whether you’re just starting or getting back to it after a long break like me!"

“An artist may not be a good teacher, but David does great as both! His teaching technique is so helpful. As a total beginner, I only had 5 lessons so far (the trial plus 4 more), but I'm already playing the original version of Childhood Memory, which is a rather difficult piece with a complicated left hand part. I thought practicing might be boring but now I'm practicing a lot and really enjoy it! Pretty much because I can make surprising progress under David's guidance, that makes me confident and motivated. Although the transit is long, I already added one more session each week. It's absolutely worthy."

“David is very professional and friendly at teaching. In the first lesson he played out every masterpiece I named, and he played immediately after I said the name, which shows very high familiarity with music from different eras. Highly recommended."

I am an adult beginner who is 60 years old. I started piano lessons with David just three weeks ago. Even within such a short period of time, I have started to enjoy playing the piano. I’ve learned to read music and can find starting notes and check notes in my vocal music. David has also taught both of my daughters (aged 9 and 10) for some time and the improvement they’ve shown has been impressive. Alina’s is obvious because of her piano exam preparation and Sophie’s sense of rhythm and independence are showing big signs of improvement now too. We are very happy that David is our piano teacher.

"David is a great teacher, who is very willing to work with you. My lessons were mostly focused on music theory, but when David noticed my uncertainty on the direction the lessons were going, he made sure to help me refocus and reestablish both my long and short term goals. David is a teacher that will help you keep focus on what you're trying to achieve while also being opened minded to new possiblities if your goals ever change."

"I’ve been a student of David’s for a while now, and am consistently delighted by his very patient yet thorough guidance as a piano teacher. I started with almost no knowledge of the instrument and little musical education in general. David is methodical and observant—tailoring my lessons to address the fundamentals but also to develop skills (quite quickly, actually) in the areas where I specifically need help the most. I’d highly recommend David for beginners like me, and—given his obvious expertise—I’d recommend for more experienced performers too."

“I started piano lessons with David as an adult beginner last year. David is not only a very skilled and passionate pianist, but also an encouraging and methodological teacher. His lessons are taught in a way that is best suited for my specific learning style and addresses any problematic areas or knowledge gaps that I have. In addition, David has helped me gain a problem-solving mindset that allows me to practice more efficiently and solve many challenging problems that arise out of piano practice on my own. Thanks to David, my piano skills have improved significantly, and I finally found a hobby that I enjoy everyday."

“David is great to work with. He's patient and understanding. He's insightful and also extremely talented. First class experience so far."

The really special thing about David’s teaching style is his ability to communicate with his students. During my time under his instruction, it was always a very open conversation about what I wanted to learn next or what kind of teaching style I felt would be most helpful for me (did I want to be pushed, do I want a laid back style of learning where there were less harsh deadlines, etc.) It was really refreshing to have a teacher that asked what kind of music I was interested in playing instead of just shoving a bunch of classical pieces my way like my past teachers had done. Working with David was so much fun because we were always doing something I was genuinely interested in doing—lessons were definitely the highlight of my week!

"David is a fantastic teacher. He cares deeply for his students and has a terrific methodology for breaking down difficult material. I came to him a beginner and he had me immediately working on one of my dream pieces. Thanks to him, I've made a surprising amount of progress on that piece within just a month, so that's pretty cool :)"

"David Chang is a one very fine teacher and pianist as well. He was very quick to asses my skills and design a study plan to improve my technique. I would highly recommend David to any aspiring musician, for his professionalism, knowledge and dedication.

“David is an extremely patient and kind teacher. He helped me with not only technical and musical problems, but also showed me how to practice more efficiently and understand music better in general. He is exceptionally knowledgeable and reliable and helped me greatly to achieve my personal goals. I feel I've improved a lot and would highly recommend him."

"I worked with David a couple years ago, but I still use his methods just because they’re so simple yet effective. For those super intense about piano (on a pre-professional track, have been playing for a long time, etc), I can attest that his approach to the piano is really insightful. The biggest take away I got was his method for memorizing pieces, where I would mentally practice away from the piano and only imagine myself playing a piece. While this might be a well-known method in the classical world, David’s meticulousness and attention to detail is what sets him apart from other teachers. In addition to adults, he’s also really great for teens and kids as well-I remember his insistence on my timely arrival taught me the very useful life skill of simply being on time. Overall, David offers really great quality lessons at a relatively low price. If given the opportunity, I’d definitely sign up for lessons!"

“I studied classical piano as a kid but hadn’t played seriously in years. David got me back into it, showing me techniques and methods (things like using sets, small sections, and spaced repetition) that helped immensely in a short amount of time. His thoughtful, modern methodology will advance anyone’s playing, whether you are a beginner or a pro. And it's not just technique he teaches, either. He focuses your attention on things like dynamics and shaping and critical listening—all with an eye to performing your pieces at their best in front of a live audience (he organizes recitals for his students). He himself is an astonishingly gifted pianist, and just watching him perform is a delight. He's easy to reach and helpful in between lessons, too. I can't recommend him and his studio highly enough. Five stars all the way."

I am proud to say David brought music into my life. As a former student, I'm grateful for the lessons I shared with David. He is a wonderful teacher who truly cares about his work and what his students learn from him. He pays attention to small details that have immense impacts on the execution of the music. In addition, David doesn't only care about the music played at the lesson, as he works to help students apply regular and effective practicing times and methods at home. I'm so grateful for the many years I enjoyed music with David's guidance and support. He was an excellent mentor, and I could never have asked for a more wonderful teacher to introduce me to the world of music. I hope to forever carry the knowledge and kindness David brought into my life. Thank you, David!"

“David is an impeccable instructor! He is scientific in what and how he teaches, takes great care with his students, is extremely knowledgeable, professional, inspiring, prompt, responsive, and has a wonderful demeanor conducive to learning.

I have played and received instruction on other instruments (recently and throughout the years), but I am a beginning student (piano mixed with some voice) with David. He has taught me critical skills for efficient and effective learning and practice (to me, this alone is HUGE), which are rooted in his extensive research and experience. I have learned to methodically build my ability to play a piece of music (the concept of sets, building sets, comprehensive execution on sets, interleaving, spaced repetition, to leverage inspiration and energy levels to make progress), to strictly analyze my music and playing, to journal my practice, and to approach my music in an acutely aware/focused/structured fashion geared towards achieving results. In vocal training I have applied these skills as well, and I have also learned additional methods to build my abilities (breathing, bracing, projection, to work through lyrics with a variety of tactics, how to deconstruct and then reconstruct something seemingly too complex for me).

Each lesson of mine adheres to the structure of theory, scales, and playing of pieces (both small pieces, and short-term and long-term goal pieces) that I have prepared for the week; this is just the combination for me. All time is spent wisely; and as each lessons plays out, David is acutely focused, incorporating his methodologies all along the way, testing my understanding, discussing practice and performance (how-to’s, and including mental practice, etc.), discussing health, providing reasoning for everything that we do, encouraging goal-setting (pieces that inspire including lofty ones, 40-piece challenge to encourage reading and exposure to new pieces), and encouraging me to ask any questions that I may have. I greatly appreciate that in lessons I am significantly challenged to think and work quickly (so as to improve my ability to play quickly). And should a question come up outside of lessons, David is very quick to respond and always generously provides extensive information.

In addition to the opportunities to play pieces cold at each lesson, David offers other invaluable performance opportunities in the form of studio classes (performance plus critique), recitals at a variety of venues, and the chance to come with him to play the Sing For Hope pianos. These also serve as wonderful opportunities for inspiration and exposure to pieces that one might not have heard of before. I personally walked away with pieces new to me and that have inspired me to keep striving to achieve!

I can say undoubtedly that David and his comprehensive methodologies have given me the tools to correct where I have gone wrong in the past and to quickly make progress which I otherwise would not have been able to. He provides the instruction and guidance of which I had always hoped to find, and I greatly recommend him to anyone no matter the age or the range of experience! He will make sure you know how to efficiently and effectively learn, practice, master, and perform. Nothing is left out, you just have to execute! :)"
